I do a lot of Professional Searching, and in my opinion these are the best general search engines, meta-search engines and directories that exist

*Safe for Kids*	Lycos Safe Zone - the safest I've found
*Big Engines*	Google - 1.5 billion pages indexed, the best search engine
	Walhello -103 million pages indexed and growing fast
	AltaVista - 550 million pages indexed
	WiseNut - 1.5 billion pages (they say) sorted into folders
	Inktomi via PositionTech - fast, pure Inktomi results
	Teoma - Google challenger, very intelligent folder sorting
	AlltheWeb - aka FAST - Google's other challenger
*Directories*	LookSmart - the biggest directory (but only just)
	Yahoo - World's No.1 web site
	Open Directory - over 3 million entries - edited by volunteers, not $$
*Meta-Search*	Search66 - AltaVista, AOL/Netscape, DMOZ, Espotting, FAST, HotBot & Yahoo!
	Vivisimo - Yahoo, WiseNut, Looksmart, MSN & Fast, sorted into folders. Javascript.
	Ixquick - combines results from 10 engines + highlights keywords in pages
	Search.com - 7 directories + AltaVista, Direct Hit, Galaxy, Lycos + Hotbot
	InfoNetWare - Google, Yahoo, MSN, FAST & Altavista - sorts into folders
	Queryserver - sorts results into categories + is very, very fast
	Zworks - Open Directory, Yahoo, Alltheweb + 7 others
	Surfwax - 11 engines, extra site info. Needs JavaScript
	SSSpider - Displays huge chunks of each result - may need a reload...
